Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are the last molars, or 'third molars' that develop each side of the jaw. These large teeth are right at the back of the mouth and usually form between the ages of 17 and 25, though they can also erupt much later or not at all. Most people have 4 wisdom teeth, 2 in the upper jaw and 2 in the lower jaw.

While a person has 32 teeth, the jaw can sometimes be too small to accommodate wisdom teeth causing them to be dysfunctional and remain below or just above the surface. This occurs when teeth become wedged or 'impacted' within soft tissue (gum) or hard tissue (bone). Some wisdom teeth may be fully buried and remain without causing any troubles. However many people find wisdom teeth cause problems in the long run.

Wisdom teeth extraction is a relatively routine procedure. They can be removed under local anaesthetic in the Dentist's chair, under intravenous sedation, or under general anaesthetic in a hospital. After the tooth (or teeth) are removed, the patient is given a gauze to bite down softly for a recommended amount of time to limit any bleeding. Some pain and swelling may occur, but it should subside within a few days.

In order for our dentist to make a recommendation on whether you or your child require wisdom teeth removal, a full mouth x-ray (OPG) will be required to assess the position, level of development and likelihood of normal eruption. We can then advise you on the appropriate treatment options along with an estimate of associated costs.

With modern dental techniques and effective local anaesthetic, wisdom teeth removal is typically comfortable during the procedure itself. Most patients feel pressure rather than pain. Some discomfort, swelling or soreness after the extraction is normal, and this is usually well managed with aftercare instructions and appropriate pain relief.

Recovery time varies depending on the complexity of the extraction. Most patients are able to return to normal activities within a few days. Your dentist will provide thorough aftercare advice to support healing and reduce the risk of complications.
